REVIEW
This book was goood! It instantly caught my attention and gave me something to look forward to getting back to after work in the evenings. If you are a Laura Purcell fan, I can highly recommend The Shadowing. It's a brilliant blend of historical fiction, suspense, mystery and a dash of the paranormal.
In the Shadowing, Hester is a Quaker and is used to the very strict ways of her Father Amos. When she learns of her sister Mercy's death, at a Nottinghamshire workhouse, she travels to Southwell to find out she ended up in such a place. However the workhouse are clearly not telling her something and haunted by her sister's ghost, Hester is resolved to find out exactly what happened...
I know you don't necessarily have to like the characters in a story to enjoy it, but I think it really helps and Hester was an excellent character. She is easily likeable and relatable and she makes this story her own. Despite the sad and suspicious circumstances that free her from the strict regime of her home, it was enjoyable to read as she slowly got to enjoy things that were previously forbidden as a Quaker in her home.
I went into this with little expectation and I got something super enjoyable and gripping. I do actually already have the author's first book on my TBR pile, The Quickening and I mustn't put it off any longer and read it.
Compelling and suspenseful, could not recommend this one more.
