Blog Tour: So Lucky by Dawn O' Porter
Today brings my stop on the blog tour for So Lucky by Dawn O'Porter. I didn't know how much I needed to read this book, until I read this book. Read on for my full review.
REVIEW
Ruby is a single Mum, bossing it, Beth runs her own buisness and shows women how they really can have everything and Lauren is living her best life in front of her millions of followers.
But in reality...
Ruby struggles with a condition that she finds deeply embarassing and isolating and also has difficulty trying to be a Mum to her 3 year old daughter Bonnie. Beth has a husband who has a distinct lack of interest in sex with her and Lauren, a social media influencer, about to have the wedding of the year but can't shake those rumours about her husband-to-be's infidelity rumours.
In the day and age of Instagram, it's very easy to think that everyone's life is perfect, that they are perfect, but So Lucky shows us that things are definitely not what they seem.
Ruby, Beth and Lauren are all responsible in their own way for 'selling' perfection. They know they are part of the problem yet perfection pays. Ruby's job in particular is particualrly damaging as she photoshops the images of women until they are almost not themselves but this is also at the request of those women. A vicious circle we can't seem to get out of.
So Lucky casts a stark light on how we as women are absolutely awful to ourselves, how much shame and self hatred we have for our looks and lives and how really we need to be a heck of a lot kinder.
Despite the serious issues this book does have some funny moments which had me snorting at my desk when I was reading it one lunchbreak. It also made me realise how actually quite ridiculous it is what we women put ourselves through and how 'influencers' use mental health as a way of engaging with their followers as they are just like the rest of us.
Honest, raw and actually hugely enlightening, So Lucky is a book every woman should read.
