How to make your house a home

When I first moved into my place, I very quickly became overwhelmed by the amount of choice there was on how to decorate. I spent ages looking at Instagram, home magazines and Pinterest Boards trying to decide what I thought would work best for me. I ended up wanting to have about a million rooms so that I could decorate them in every style and look and feel. Also the photos I was looking at were of course amazing, but I knew that I was never going to get that exact look and feel as they had different sized rooms, walls, floors etc. Also as I have quickly realised that my home is never going to be 100% pristine all of the time, these looks are not always achievable and I have a LOT of stuff, whereas these images were all very minimalist. It made me realise that I need to put my own stamp on my home and add my own personal touches to make it mine.

Photographs

No matter where you live and no matter how big or small, there is always space for photographs. Empty walls can make your home look really sparse and that was one of things I noticed instantly when we moved in. Just by putting a photo up, it can make the world of difference and bring life into a room. If you're like me you probably have millions of photos on your phone or even still in your camera, but definitely think about going to get some of those printed as then you can put them on your wall to look at whenever you want. Depending on how old you are, I remember you had to go and get your photos printed as digital cameras and phones with cameras didn't exist, so you couldn't view them when you wanted. There was something really rewarding about getting them printed and then putting them on your walls, so really think about doing that now. Place small prints in stand-alone frames on shelves, window ledges, and counters. Have images expanded and printed onto Panoramic canvas, there are so many places you can put them.

Posters, Prints or Pictures

You don't have to just put photos up, you can also decorate your home with prints. I have recently become obsessed with prints and want to cover my walls in them. There are so many to choose from these days. They can be pictures, or what I have is really popular recently are quotes. You can so easily make a collage on your wall from them, which again is something really on trend at the moment. It adds a bit of finesse to your home and is definitely a great alternative to photos if you don't want to put those up. Again it can bring a room to life just by adding these onto your walls or mantelpieces.

House Plants or Flowers

One of my absolute favourite thing to have in my house at the moment is houseplants. If you're looking for a pop of colour there is bound to be a plant that can do this for your home. Also if you're a bit like me and sometimes forget to water them, there are loads of low maintenance plants you can get that won't get upset if you forget to water them occasionally. House Plants don't just mean solely green plants either, you can get beautiful hanging baskets with flowers of all colours and you can also buy bunches of flowers to instantly make your rooms pop. What a lot of people don't realise as well is that house plants are actually really good for you. They purify the air, so they don't just make your home more beautiful, they make you healthier too! However if you do have young kids or pets, make sure you buy non-toxic plants in your home.

These are just a few small ideas on how to make your house a home and really make it yours. I am slowly getting there with my place, but these are the things that I added almost immediately and it has made a world of difference. When guests come over, I'm proud that it is my own and not just a blank space.
