Today on Laura's little book blog, I am so excited to be part of the blog tour for The One by John Marrs. This is a psycholigcal thriller with a difference and I am delighted to be able to share my review and there's a chance to win a copy too!
All your love finding problems have been solved, there is now a way of finding 'The One' by sending a sample of your DNA to matchyourdna.co.uk. Divorce rates are at an all time low and finding the one couldn't be simpler or more dangerous...
This is a psychological thriller that sets itself apart from the rest! I have never experienced so many jaw dropping moments in one book. Told in five different characters points of view, Mandy, Christopher, Jade, Nick and Ellie, there was never a dull moment in this book, or a chance to catch your breath! Drawing on the digital dating world of today, it highlights the dangers of how much we share about ourselves online in our quest to find love.
The One felt like a new type of thriller to me, I certainly have never come across anything like it and I have read a lot of thrillers. It was the epitome of addictive and it really gets inside your head. Once I finished reading, I felt like I needed a reality check as I had got so deeply engrossed in this I felt like I was part of the story.
I was constantly left desperate to keep on reading as each character's chapter would end on a cliffhanger I always had to get back to their story and see how it would pan out. The chapters are short enough that you don't lose the plot of each character and it just compels you even more to read on. Not once could I even begin to imagine where this book was going to go and the author very cleverly distracts you by leaving you hanging after each character's chapter and not overlapping their stories. It's safe to say that the plot was brilliantly executed.
Who did I warm to the most? Well initially Ellie, until we got further into her story and I didn't think it would be possible, but my feelings towards Christopher changed too. It's rare that you get to know characters as deeply as John has created for us. They were incredibly real and believable.
I am almost lost for words at how brilliant this was. Super addictive and so compelling, a must read!
To be in a chance of winning an advance paperback proof of The One, enter via rafflecopter below. UK Only, ends 31.1.17. Good Luck!
I'd like to win this book since you give just enough information to make it sound really intriguing! The basic plot element of the DNA-based dating service feels original. I've possibly seen that or something similar done in comedy before, but never a psycho-thriller. Cheers!
