Review
Shockingly this is my first Fiona Gibson read, but I can 100% say that it was a brilliant read!
As Good as it Gets first reels you in with some funny, but at the same time awful letter exchanges between Charlotte and her then boyfriend's Mother. We are then transported to 16 years later where Charlotte is having a sort of but not really mid-life crisis. Her teenage son Oliver, 13 and daughter Rosie, 16 find her embarrassing to be around, and Rosie also finds her annoying and won't tell her anything. And then her husband Will, who is currently jobless, has been offish with her for far too long and is making her doubt their relationship. Then Rosie gets scouted by a modelling agency in Forever 21 leading to Charlotte's ex getting in touch and Rosie asking questions about him. Phew! All these things lead Charlotte to ask the question, is this as good as it gets?
This is such a great book to get lost in. You can't help but like Charlotte who is actually very funny, but at the same time you feel really sorry for her as her family don't seem to appreciate her and she is the butt of many of the family jokes! You will also get incredibly frustrated with Will who seems to be going through his own mid-life crisis and at one point thinks it's a good idea to wear leather trousers! Rosie is just a typical teenage girl, but Oliver is actually the funniest of them all! Anyone would be lucky to have him as a son/brother! Charlotte's family are actually really quite relatable and it was nice to read about a normal family that actually have real life problems and then some.
There were some really laugh-out-loud moments in this, such as Charlotte describing the vastness of Forever 21 and coming out of Hollister with the wrong colour jumper due to it being so dark! I have actually done this! I came out with what I thought was a pink jumper when it was actually red!
I am now a true Fiona Gibson fan and will have to read her other books!!!
A brilliantly funny, uplifting, warm and cosy read to snuggle up on the sofa with during these cold winter months.
